How Tutoring Proves Addictive

It is currently 4:30 on a Tuesday at the Bethlehem Center. The kids in Miss Sheree’s room are practicing for a talent show, so if you were to walk around the Center right now, you’d immediately hear the squeals and giggles of 5 and 6 year olds excited about having a chance to show off.

These squeals and giggles are what make working and volunteering here so addictive. Immediately new volunteers are greeted with hugs and smiles. Once, one of our 3rd graders hugged a perfect stranger who was walking through the halls. That’s what you do here, right? A new adult comes in, we greet with hugs!

We hold tutors here to high standards. They are expected to abide by rules concerning the safety of both themselves and the kids. They are also told that committing to serve as a tutor is committing to serve for one hour a week, one semester out of the year. We ask that they commit to only an hour at first, then if they decide they’d like to come more, we will go from there.

But when greeted by hugs and smiles, it’s very difficult to only stick to an hour. It’s the addictive quality of tutoring at the Bethlehem Center.
